PREP: Flu Prevention

While friends and lovers are sharing flowers and chocolate for Valentine’s Day, they might want to give some thought to how easily the flu virus can be shared.
The height of flu season is upon us and PREP (People Responding to Emergencies Program) is reminding everyone that preparedness isn’t always about evacuation and large-scale disaster.
Sometimes preparedness is a series of smaller, back-to-basics actions. With the flu season upon us, a primer of do’s and don’t’s could help you and your family stay healthy. And with continuing concerns about avian flu, it’s wise to take prevention seriously.
PREP will hold a news conference tomorrow, February 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the UW EMS office at 3330 University Avenue, Suite 300.

Speakers will include Dr. Dennis Maki, Professor of Medicine, Head of Infectious Diseases Section at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison; and Dr. Thomas Schlenker, Director of Public Health for Madison and Dane County.

The objective of PREP is behavioral change – individuals taking responsibility to prepare themselves, their families and their property for safety in a disaster or emergency.
