PREP: Pet Preparedness News Conference
Pet preparedness often takes a back seat to emergency preparedness, but
recent disasters have provided stark reminders of why it is so important.
Among the most haunting images of Hurricane Katrina were the pets abandoned
in flooded New Orleans by owners who were told by rescuers that they could
not leave with their animals.
Many residents died because they insisted on staying with their pets rather
than leaving them to starve or drown.
In addition, pets left behind became hungry, frightened, and posed additional
dangers to residents and rescue workers alike.
Both to facilitate evacuation, and to create a safer environment in the
aftermath of a disaster or emergency, pet owners have a responsibility
to themselves, their pets and there communities to make preparedness plans
for their animals.
It is best to be overly cautious during a disaster warning. Preparing
ahead of time and acting quickly is the best way to keep you and your
family, including your animals, out of danger.
