Build Your Home Survival Kit
March 2006

The following lists will be discussed in January 2006. The supplies are listed as "Essential" and "Recommended". The lists should be tailored to your specific needs. It is advised that you begin to accumulate these supplies prior to January.


ESSENTIAL ITEMS


Extra pair of glasses or contact lenses, with solution
Extra supply of prescription medications
Copies of important family documents in a fire and waterproof container-insurance
Denture supplies, extra hearing aid batteries
Essential health support items

a) Infants & children-diapers, formula,
b) the elderly,
c) people with special needs-medical equipment, diabetes supplies, oxygen support


FIRST AID KIT

Sterile adhesive bandages in sterile packages
Sterile gauze pads
First aid tape
Tweezers
Antiseptic moist towelettes
Antiseptic ointment
Non-prescription medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-diarrhea, etc.
Soap
Safety pins
Scissors


IN-CAR SUPPLY KIT

Flares
Shovel
Jumper cables
Flashlight and batteries
Radio and batteries
Blankets
Bottled water and high-energy food such as granola bars
Fire extinguisher (5lb., ABC)


FOR PETS

Extra dry and canned food
Drinking water
Leashes, collars, pet ID
Copies of veterinary records
Supplies for sanitation


RECOMMENDED ITEMS
The following items are recommended to be included in your family disaster supplies kit.

Fire extinguisher (5 lb., ABC)
Adjustable wrench for turning off utilities
Plastic sheeting
Duct tape
Other tools such as pliers and wire cutters
Household bleach
Credit cards and extra cash
Extra car keys

FIRST AID KIT

Roller Gauze
Triangular bandages
Thermometer
Sunscreen
Latex gloves


IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, DO REMEMBER TO CONSIDER:
Be ready to move your kit and supplies where you and you family will be sheltering--in the basement, to the car if evacuating the neighborhood, etc.

OTHER POINTS TO REMEMBER:

• Label water containers filled with tap water with the date, and change every 6 months. Sealed, bottled water does not require cycling.

• Have games and activities available for kids such as coloring books .
